Summary: A thorough cranial nerve examination is an essential part of the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation of every patient. When performed, it is useful in the diagnosis of speech and swallowing disorders, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for development of a targeted, individualized treatment plan. This video course provides an overview of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the cranial nerve examination. Summary: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can be life-changing for many individuals, but due to its complex and commercial nature, it also comes with a myriad of potential ethical concerns. Clinicians can improve AAC assessment and intervention outcomes for those they serve by being confident they are making ethically informed decisions about AAC use. This webinar uses case studies to discuss common ethical dilemmas encountered in the use of AAC, leaning on the ASHA Code of Ethics for support. Summary: This course focuses on emerging research and changing practices in the management of dysphagia as it relates to aspiration pneumonia prevention and oral care. The presenters review the contribution of oral biofilms to bacterial aspiration pneumonia and systemic health, and discuss the genesis and treatments for aspiration pneumonia. The course describes the national VA deployment of a pneumonia prevention initiative and provides practical instruction in the development of an oral care program participants can use to implement a program in their own facility.

Summary: Behavioral interventions that provide a calibrated mode for strengthening inspiratory and expiratory muscles are limited and often non-evidence-based. This on demand webinar discusses the evidence base for respiratory muscle strength training (RMST) devices and shares the assessment and treatment protocols necessary for valid implementation of respiratory muscle strength training protocols. Summary: This webinar will discuss the anatomical, physiological, neurological, and cognitive factors that affect the speech intelligibility of children and adolescents with Down syndrome. Although there are similarities among people who have this genetic disorder, evaluation and treatment are highly individualized based on specific factors that influence a particular individual’s speech. The speaker will discuss evaluation and treatment planning, including forms that clinicians can use right away in their own practice.
