Course Description

SLPs can empower students to develop personalized and resilient self-talk to boost executive function skills by giving them the tools to construct it. This session explores assessment and treatment of executive function deficits in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) utilizing a language-based approach. The speaker presents research-based strategies that help SLPs view executive functioning deficits—and how to effectively treat them—from a new perspective.

You will be able to:

  • Discuss the functional working definition of executive function skills as it pertains to the development of internal independent skills
  • List the three core executive function skills that are directly linked to independent skills in the home, social, and academic environments
  • Identify an intervention exercise incorporating visual imagery and/or self-talk to foster a student’s ability to form independent executive function skills

Presenter Information

Michael McLeod, MA, CCC-SLP, TSSLD, is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Executive Function/ADHD Specialist. Michael focuses on the unique and innovative skill of Internal Language while constructing interpersonal relationships and meaningful, varied experiences for students. The evidence-based GrowNOW Model utilizes a wholistic approach toward decreasing prompt dependency and strengthening independence, through the lens of the academic, social, and emotional methodology. Michael is the owner of GrowNOW Therapy Services, LLC, a specialized private practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He partners with several public and private schools to assist them in developing their Executive Functioning programming by training staff and working directly with students. Michael has presented nationwide and internationally, training families and professionals on his unique GrowNOW Treatment Model for fostering Executive Functions & Resiliency.
