Summary: This session explores effective techniques and resources to help children with selective mutism (SM), an anxiety-based disorder that significantly impacts a child's ability to speak in certain contexts, make progress in school and beyond. The webinar discusses the challenges of speech-language service provision and supervision during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the needs of clients, supervisees, and clinicians themselves. The pandemic has created many professional challenges for SLPs, including the need to quickly adjust to telepractice for service delivery and supervision, emotional stressors and trauma that may exacerbate clients’ communication difficulties, and vicarious traumatization of clinicians themselves. Without attention and intervention, professional fatigue can negatively impact a professional’s home life, relationships, personal well-being, work life, and/or ability to deliver person-centered care. Summary: This SIG 1 activity focuses on ethical challenges that audiologists and SLPs may face in various school-based scenarios. A 5-step ethical decision-making approach is presented. An ethical decision-making model is used to help prepare clinicians for the ethical continuation of telepractice in schools. Summary: Multilingual children are often over- or under-identified as having speech- and/or language-related disorders. This on demand webinar reviews the underlying causes of this disproportionality, the role that SLPs can play in prevention, and the importance of nonbiased assessment. The presenter discusses how SLPs can improve the accuracy of language-related disorder identification in schools by leveraging their unique skill set. The webinar presents a framework for disproportionality prevention as well as information about specific assessment methods.
