Summary: Working with critically ill patients with complex case presentations requires the use of not only evidence-based practices but also creativity to develop individualized treatment programs and advocate for additional services. Summary: This session covers a unique case of bilateral temporal bone fractures: one that spares the otic capsule yet presents with a large sensorineural component. The speaker describes the anatomy and physiology of the temporal bone to provide background information about potential structures that can be damaged in a fracture as well as explain the varying etiologies of temporal bone fractures (TBF). In addition, this session discusses possible outcomes from a TBF in relation to hearing loss and facial nerve function and potential implications for treatment, including cochlear implantation.

Summary: Each adult with dysphagia presents with unique characteristics, each setting provides different challenges, and each treatment team functions in different ways. Therefore, in addition to possessing core knowledge, SLPs need to consider all related factors and apply critical-thinking skills to meet the needs of each patient. In this course, you'll learn to consider these factors through collaboration with the patient, family, and other team members, and enhance communication and documentation of your recommendations.

Summary: In this series of articles, the need for clear guidelines in graduate education on the topic of transgender voice and communication is explored through an e-survey. Considerations for culturally competent voice care is presented in the context of two case studies. Case studies are also used to highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary gender affirming approach for successful voice care with adolescence. In the final article, a voice technique is adapted for voice masculinization.

Summary: This journal self-study course is composed of papers from the 7th Aging and Speech Communication Conference (April 2019). The articles cover a range of topics about speech processing in normal aging, including changes in auditory pathways and cortical structures in older adults with and without hearing loss; the relationship between cognitive skills and hearing performance in older adults; speech perception of older and younger adults when certain linguistic factors are manipulated; and age-related effects of processing accented speech in native and non-native speakers.

Summary: SLPs need to combine their understanding of physiology with multiple related factors to determine if an instrumental exam is needed, which exam is indicated, when it is needed, and why. Then they must effectively explain recommendations and findings to the patient, family, and other team members. Summary: Cultural competence can be defined as the knowledge and skills a provider requires in order to meet the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of clients, patients, and/or students while providing impactful services. This micro course explores questions like, "What are ways I can obtain information about the cultural traditions, preferences, and experiences of a client, patient, or student?" and "How can I partner with them to gain this essential information?"
