Comparing Emotion & Word Recognition: Effect of Masker Type (PD102505)

Presenter(s): Stacy Garrard; Tiffany Hoskins; Shae D Morgan
Course Description

This course presents a study that looked at effect of masker type on both emotion and word recognition at different signal to noise ratios (SNRs). Twenty-four young adult listeners with normal hearing completed emotional questionnaires and two forced-choice tasks: choosing a target word or perceived emotion from a list of four choices. Word and emotion recognition were affected by masker stimulus characteristics, with best performance in a background of speech-modulated noise. Emotion recognition was differentially hindered compared to word recognition in the presence of a two-talker babble masker, suggesting that emotion recognition may be more obscured by linguistic context than word recognition, when listening in complex environments.

This course is a recorded technical research session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 4628V).

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • State how masker characteristics influence word recognition performance
  • State how masker characteristics influence emotion recognition performance
  • Compare how maskers influence emotion and word recognition
