Summary: This presentation provides an overview of the clinical use of bone conduction hearing devices across the life span. Summary: Technology is ever-evolving, so it can be difficult to know what options are available—and which are evidence-based. This session will review recent literature and provide examples of assistive technologies (AT)—including those that are visually based, auditory-based, or a combination—and resources that can be used with students with (C)APDs. The presenter will also discuss nontraditional resources such as online and in-person support groups for parents and professionals for those situations when an expert is not available. Summary: This session discusses auditory brainstem implants (ABI) as an option for individuals who typically cannot benefit from conventional amplification or cochlear implants as they don't have an implantable cochlea or functioning 8th nerve. The session describes the ABI journey from candidacy to surgery to activation and follow-up. The speaker discusses the history of ABI, anatomy of the auditory pathway, interprofessional education and interprofessional practice related to ABI, and ABI clinical trial data.

Summary: SLP roles, practices, and opportunities when working with children and adults with TBI have transformed over the past two decades. Much of the change has been driven by external forces, including insurance, science, regulations, and more. This session empowers SLPs to drive TBI practice advances in 2020 and beyond, focusing on three key areas: (1) re-imagining intervention for patients with cognitive impairments in acute care and inpatient rehabilitation, (2) defining what we do and how it helps across the recovery continuum, and (3) characterizing “functional” in terms of what it means for people with communication disorders after TBI. Summary: Many of the static assessments administered by speech-language pathologists have some degree of cultural assumptions and are often limited in representing diverse groups. This course provides strategies to assess standardized assessments' cultural and linguistic sensitivity and provides guidance for the use of alternative assessment options.
