Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic. This course provides the clinician with a review of holistic assessments and health literacy approaches that will empower the patient to make informed decisions. Summary: Recent studies have implicated fatigue as an important consequence of listening effort, but the impact of fatigue on children is poorly understood. One problem is the lack of a measure of listening-related fatigue. In this presentation, the presenters (1) introduce the construct of listening-related fatigue, and (2) describe the development and validation of the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale designed to quantify listening-related fatigue. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.

Summary: Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 stating that people with disabilities should have access to their communities, a critical component has often been overlooked—training emergency first responders to communicate with people who have complex communication needs. In this session, two SLPs demonstrate how they have trained nearly 2,000 emergency first responders.

Summary: This session explores the strong and complex relationship between pediatric mental and behavioral health and skills in cognition, language, and social communication. The session reviews a speech-language pathology program and service delivery model for youth receiving acute psychiatric care at one of the nation’s top pediatric hospitals, emphasizing the distinct role of SLPs in providing care to youth with mental and behavioral illnesses.

Summary: This course demonstrates how Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is using telehealth applications to address the needs of children with hearing loss during the COVID-19 pandemic and into the future, including remote hearing aid evaluations, fittings, programming, repairs, and functional benefit assessments. The course is one in a set of practical programs that address specific aspects of remote practice in audiology.

Summary: This session discusses a study that examined the feasibility of telehealth administration of narrative and procedural discourse tasks to individuals with TBI and matched controls. Results support the feasibility of collecting discourse samples via telehealth. Although the participants' discourse performance distinguished the TBI and control groups on the narrative task, no differences between the groups were noted for the procedural task.

Summary: Motivation often declines as children reach adolescence. Poor motivation inhibits participation and engagement in language-based interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how intervention can be designed to increase client motivation to participate in therapy while improving language-based literacy skills. This session presents motivation and behavior change techniques based on self-determination theory. It also includes examples of how to integrate these techniques into interventions with adolescent clients to satisfy their need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence while simultaneously addressing language-based literacy deficits.

Summary: In the era of COVID-19, clinicians in health care settings have faced challenges in the evaluation and treatment of a new patient population - those who have had COVID-19 - requiring us to reframe our current treatment techniques. This session focuses on reinventing the speech-language pathologist's approach to treatment of respiratory activity tolerance for motor speech. It addresses collaboration with physical and occupational therapists for incorporation of dual motor tasks with more traditional treatment. Speakers discuss goal writing and tips for tracking measurable outcomes.

Summary: It is commonly understood that better outcomes for management and treatment of hearing loss can be linked to greater knowledge and acceptance of the condition by the patient/client/student and their families. Knowledge is power. However, often individuals and their families do not have access to an impartial site hosting a variety of resources for review. This presentation discusses the need and development of an accessible and neutral site where individuals and their families can access diverse information and a variety of literature around topics related to hearing loss. It will also cover the steps for the development of a cultural and informational center, including tips on fundraising and overall management.

Summary: This introductory-level course will provide an overview of working with adult patients in the home health care setting. The speaker will share the basics of SLP reimbursement and regulation in this unique care setting, along with recommendations for assessment and treatment with a functional focus. The on demand webinar (available beginning May 3, 2024) will discuss clinical decision-making strategies and suggestions for documentation as well as special considerations for SLPs in the home health care setting, such as safety, counseling, and self-care.
