Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: This session is designed for SLPs from any work setting who are considering serving, or have been asked to serve, as an expert witness. The speakers introduce the role of an expert witness, in contrast to the role of a fact witness, and review the qualifications and distinctive roles and responsibilities of an expert witness, with a focus on relevant laws (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, IDEA, and ADA). The session—a recorded session from ASHA’s 2020 Private Practice Connect online conference—includes discussion of oral and written communication best practices, as they are fundamental to the role of an expert witness. Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic. This course provides the clinician with a review of holistic assessments and health literacy approaches that will empower the patient to make informed decisions. Summary: Live captioning systems can be used in schools, clinical health/therapy settings, restaurants, banks, and other settings where captioning services are difficult to obtain or simply not available. This session identifies issues limiting the use of these systems, proposes solutions, and provides best practice suggestions for how to deploy universally accessible captioning, note-taking, and translation systems in all situations.
