Summary: This course is one part of a four-course learning path/course set, Foundations of Effective Supervision. Feedback and reflection is a key component of professional growth—for supervisees and supervisors. Self-assessment plays a vital role in improving the skills of clinical educators, preceptors, mentors, and supervisors, and this course will provide the opportunity for clinicians to explore their own competencies in supervision based on the results of a self-assessment tool. Summary: This course—a recorded session from ASHA’s 2017 Private Practice Connect conference—reviews a service delivery model using a series of single-subject research designs to demonstrate the efficacy of telepractice compared to traditional on-site services. Summary: Speech-language pathologists working in health care are faced with many challenges, including an ever-changing reimbursement and regulatory landscape and varied patient population. These challenges require ongoing education and training, as well as knowledge of evidence-based practices and appropriate roles and responsibilities. This self-study addresses issues that SLPs working with dysphagia need to consider so that they can help their patients achieve the best possible clinical outcomes. The course begins with a discussion of the role of the SLP in addressing cough and then delves into a further discussion of sensory processing and how that may affect swallowing. It continues with a detailed description of issues the SLP must consider in long-term care settings and when providing palliative care. SLPs working with individuals with dysphagia can use this information to improve services and advocate for their role in the challenging health care environment.

Summary: This course includes five recorded sessions from the 2018 online conference “Improving Functional Outcomes in Aphasia.” These sessions discuss specific treatment approaches for particular challenges and deficits that may affect individuals with aphasia. The conference included a total of 15 sessions, giving a comprehensive view of the current landscape of aphasia intervention as well as related subjects, including medical management, neuroplasticity, life participation, assessment, and more. Sessions explored practical treatment strategies to meet the needs of patients across the severity spectrum and in various treatment settings, as well as the unique needs of a range of patient subgroups.

Summary: Do you wonder why you have children on your caseload who have had the same speech sound production errors for years? Do you wonder what you can do to help the 5th grader who continues to have trouble with the /r/ sound? Do you wonder what happens to these children after they are off your caseload? This webinar will discuss these and other questions that the presenter herself had as a practicing school-based SLP and that she now attempts to solve as a researcher. In this webinar, she will explore the factors that influence language, literacy, and cognitive skills for children with early, persistent, and remediated speech sound disorders. Discussion will include how SLPs can help these children more quickly as well as assessment considerations for ensuring the best outcomes from intervention.
