Summary: Approximately 1 million people are currently living with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the United States, with more than 60,000 people newly diagnosed with PD each year. Although PD can often be effectively managed by a combination of pharmacological and nonpharmacological options during the earlier stages, many individuals with PD experience progressive disability and require increased support from health and social services. This course describes a study that includes findings from semi-structured interviews with people with PD and their family members (based in Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas) about their current unmet needs and barriers to service delivery. In addition, the course discusses some of the future directions and avenues that may benefit the PD community.

Summary: This presentation addresses the underlying neuropathology of ataxia, dysarthria-specific assessment and treatment for degenerative ataxias, and the importance of cognitive assessment and treatment. Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: Motor speech disorders occur secondary to a wide variety of progressive neurological disorders. This course discusses strategies for the speaker, listener, and environment that clinicians can consider for managing progressive motor speech disorders. Summary: This course describes the various ways that a head and neck cancer diagnosis can impact mental health, and ways to identify when a patient may need to seek professional help from a mental health specialist. The speaker highlights how a speech-language pathologist can assist in the detection of a potential mental health disorder through use of mental health screenings and head-and-neck-specific quality-of-life measures, and discusses considerations for addressing mental health and effectively navigating challenges that may impede success during treatment and/or rehabilitation.

Summary: Professional fatigue and self-care are critical issues for audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Without attention and intervention, professional fatigue can negatively impact a professional’s home life, relationships, personal well-being, work life, and/or ability to deliver person-centered care. This course explores the concepts of empathy, emotional contagion, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, and burnout as they relate to the professions and offers tips to avoid and address these challenges.
