Partnering With Families in Educational Settings: School-Based Virtual Parent Coaching (PD102519)

Presenter(s): Kristin N Schaaf, MA, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT; Shannon Sharma, MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd
Course Description

School-based speech-language pathologists are challenged every day to effectively engage and involve families in students’ school therapy programs. AG Bell’s Auditory-Verbal Principles for Educators state that our role as professionals is to guide, coach, and collaborate with families. We know that consistent and high-quality family involvement is critical to achieve listening and spoken language outcomes; however, involving families in schools has its unique challenges. This session demonstrates how to provide “school-based virtual parent coaching”: a solution to family involvement in school-based intervention. Speakers present a roadmap to providing best-practice parent coaching through this adaptation of the teletherapy model.

This course is a recorded technical session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 4066V).

Content disclosure: This session focuses on working with families through "school-based virtual parent coaching" sessions and will not discuss other types of intervention models outside of asking participants to consider how they currently provide intervention in schools.

  • Explain family involvement as a critical component in a child’s speech, language, and listening development, and list the LSL Principles that highlight the importance of parents as partners

  • Incorporate virtual parent coaching in your school-based services to maximize family involvement, empower and coach families, and improve listening and spoken language outcomes
