Summary: This session presents a review of the empirical uses of experimenter-created morphological awareness assessment tasks found in recent literature. The presenter summarizes assessments by type of morphemes assessed, type of morphological task employed, intended age ranges, and possible administration modes. The goal of the presentation is to provide clinicians with the relevant information from recent morphological awareness assessment literature for them to feel confident in selecting morphological awareness assessments for their own clients.

Summary: This session focuses on the use of in-situ measures and development of patient amplification prescriptions. The importance of in-situ measures is widely overlooked or misunderstood. Dissecting the benefits of this and other built-in manufacturer software features will provide opportunity for significant improvement in fitting outcomes and patient satisfaction over conventional first-fit settings.

Summary: The audiogram is a poor representation of a person's underlying otopathology and can therefore be a poor predictor of a person's hearing impairment. For example, persons with audiometric thresholds within normal limits may experience hearing impairment such as difficulty hearing in noise. Cochlear synaptopathy and outer hair cell dysfunction are two otopathologies undetected by the standard audiogram (a.k.a. Hidden Hearing Loss), but outer hair cell function plays a primary role in hearing in noise performance. A third undetected otopathology is cochlear untuning, which occurs secondary to outer hair cell damage. This course discusses each of these otopathologies and presents clinical normative data that can be used to differentially diagnose each otopathology.

Summary: This course provides an overview of privacy laws affecting speech, language, and hearing professionals. The presenter discusses privacy laws and reviews clinical scenarios in both health care and school settings. The course satisfies the patient confidentiality coursework requirement for individuals seeking ASHA certification as an audiology assistant or a speech-language pathology assistant. Summary: This session covers a unique case of bilateral temporal bone fractures: one that spares the otic capsule yet presents with a large sensorineural component. The speaker describes the anatomy and physiology of the temporal bone to provide background information about potential structures that can be damaged in a fracture as well as explain the varying etiologies of temporal bone fractures (TBF). In addition, this session discusses possible outcomes from a TBF in relation to hearing loss and facial nerve function and potential implications for treatment, including cochlear implantation.

Summary: It is commonly understood that better outcomes for management and treatment of hearing loss can be linked to greater knowledge and acceptance of the condition by the patient/client/student and their families. Knowledge is power. However, often individuals and their families do not have access to an impartial site hosting a variety of resources for review. This presentation discusses the need and development of an accessible and neutral site where individuals and their families can access diverse information and a variety of literature around topics related to hearing loss. It will also cover the steps for the development of a cultural and informational center, including tips on fundraising and overall management.

Summary: Many of the static assessments administered by speech-language pathologists have some degree of cultural assumptions and are often limited in representing diverse groups. This course provides strategies to assess standardized assessments' cultural and linguistic sensitivity and provides guidance for the use of alternative assessment options.

Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic. This course provides the clinician with a review of holistic assessments and health literacy approaches that will empower the patient to make informed decisions.
