Presenter(s): Amy K Graham, MA, CCC-SLP
Credit(s): PDHs: 1.0, ASHA CEUs*: 0.1
Summary: This session explores how to properly assess the speech mechanism for underlying structural/functional deficits that could impede progress in treatment. The speaker provides practical strategies to help SLPs elicit target phonemes using a phonetic approximation approach along with cognitive reframing. The session also addresses considerations for target selection and strategies to promote generalization.

Summary: Given the complexity and variability of speech sound disorders (SSD) in children, along with the large number of intervention approaches from which to choose, the volume of information can be overwhelming. This session presents functionally and clinically relevant information from leading clinical experts on the critical aspects of clinical management of SSD in children: assessment, analysis, and intervention.
Presenter(s): Rene L Utianski, PhD, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS; Kristie A Spencer, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Motor speech disorders occur secondary to a wide variety of progressive neurological disorders. This course discusses strategies for the speaker, listener, and environment that clinicians can consider for managing progressive motor speech disorders. Presenters discuss management strategies in the context of concomitant decline of cognitive-linguistic and motoric function from neurodegenerative processes.
Presenter(s): Shelley L. Velleman, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex sensory-motor speech disorder that typically requires both intensive individualized intervention and systematic opportunities for generalization and carryover. CAS also has significant academic and functional impacts, especially on participation, language, and literacy. This session uses case studies to explore areas of need requiring different service delivery models in the school setting. The speaker discusses potential areas of collaboration to support the learning and full participation of children with CAS. This course is a recorded session from the 2020/2021 online conference “Practical Solutions for Elementary Assessment, Treatment, and Collaboration.”

Summary: This session focuses on practical assessment and treatment related to lateral lisps. The speaker discusses how to properly assess a child's speech mechanism to uncover-or rule out-underlying structural/functional deficits that could impede progress. The session also shares practical intervention tips to help SLPs elicit non-lateralized target phonemes using phonetic shaping and cognitive reframing.
Presenter(s): Huanhuan Shi, MS; Meredith Kincaide; Christina Reuterskiold, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: This course focuses on a meaning-based approach to language assessment and intervention for intentional communication skills in young children. The nonlinguistic and linguistic context support meaning-driven communication expressed with language form from the child. Speakers discuss language sample analysis and the developmental hierarchy of Language Content/Form/Use, and highlight how this approach is less biased than norm-based assessments when used with children from culturally and linguistically diverse contexts.
Presenter(s): Megan A Morris, PhD, MPH, CCC-SLP; Carolyn R Baylor, PhD, CCC-SLP; Ryan D. Pollard, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-F

Summary: Health care providers' attitudes toward and skills communicating with people with communication disabilities may affect patients' health care outcomes. This session presents research that suggests providers are aware of these inequities but lack skills and confidence to address them. The session explores how training and other initiatives are needed to help providers better care for patients with communication disabilities.
Presenter(s): Donna Henderson, PsyD

Summary: Autism can present quite differently in boys and girls, and research demonstrates that many girls and women are being misdiagnosed or missed entirely. In this recorded session from ASHA’s 2021 Schools Connect online conference, the presenter explores the subtle presentation of autism in general and the specific ways that girls and women can present. The speaker discusses the importance of a comprehensive social cognition assessment to increase the likelihood of proper autism diagnosis.
Presenter(s): Alicia Bazzano, MD, PhD, MPH

Summary: This recorded session from the ASHA Audiology 2022 Online Conference highlights the needs and overall health disparities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The speaker discusses skills and strategies that audiologists can use to increase their confidence when caring for this population. By identifying and treating hearing-related issues, audiologists can help reduce the communication barriers that people with IDD face, contributing to overall health equity for this population.

Summary: Culture plays a foundational role in our daily interactions. Have you ever made a mistake or had a less-than-positive interaction with a student, parent, or colleague and wondered if a cultural misunderstanding is the culprit? This recorded session from ASHA's 2021 Schools Connect online conference shares a case scenario and guided reflection tool to help practitioners process this type of experience through a culturally responsive lens and showing clinicians how to reflect, learn, and make changes in their professional practice.
