Summary: This course focuses on a meaning-based approach to language assessment and intervention for intentional communication skills in young children. The nonlinguistic and linguistic context support meaning-driven communication expressed with language form from the child. Speakers discuss language sample analysis and the developmental hierarchy of Language Content/Form/Use, and highlight how this approach is less biased than norm-based assessments when used with children from culturally and linguistically diverse contexts.

Summary: This session explores how hearing level, device use, and room acoustics alter the potential for children who are Deaf or hard of hearing to have auditory access to classroom instruction. Summary: Due process hearings are legal procedures established in special education to provide for resolution when the parents and school personnel disagree. This session reviews ethical principles associated with due process and the legal responsibilities associated with being a witness in a due process hearing. The speaker shares strategies for preventing and resolving disputes and representing ourselves, our students, and our profession equitably when called into a hearing.

Summary: This session shares easy-to-implement strategies for more diverse service delivery models, including classroom-based services. The speaker explores flexible scheduling examples, using the curriculum to target speech and language targets, and the art of collecting authentic data in integrated settings. Summary: This session covers a unique case of bilateral temporal bone fractures: one that spares the otic capsule yet presents with a large sensorineural component. The speaker describes the anatomy and physiology of the temporal bone to provide background information about potential structures that can be damaged in a fracture as well as explain the varying etiologies of temporal bone fractures (TBF). In addition, this session discusses possible outcomes from a TBF in relation to hearing loss and facial nerve function and potential implications for treatment, including cochlear implantation.

Summary: A better understanding is needed of the barriers and facilitators in accessing communication services by gender diverse individuals. This session describes a conceptual model of health care access and shows its use in developing a group solution to improve gender expansive individuals' access of communication services.

Summary: There is evidence that many factors contribute to the varied performance outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients, including etiology and quality of the electrode neuron interfaces (ENI). This course examines a study that investigated the intersection of these factors by analyzing the records and device settings for 156 children with confirmed diagnoses of either enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) or Connexin-26 mutations.
