Summary: This presentation describes the evidence and future directions for research, practice, and policy to address factors that contribute to disparities in care between minority and non-minority patients. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that persons living with all types of communication disabilities experience disparities in the receipt of high-quality health care services.

Summary: Language assessment in children who are deaf or hard of hearing often focuses on language outcomes without a precise characterization of the child's language learning history. Speech-language pathologists and other early interventionists need support in ensuring that the child's cumulative experience with linguistic input (or lack thereof) is also captured. This session presents a practical approach for this process that follows emerging research on language access profiles. Summary: This journal self-study course is composed of papers from the 7th Aging and Speech Communication Conference (April 2019). The articles cover a range of topics about speech processing in normal aging, including changes in auditory pathways and cortical structures in older adults with and without hearing loss; the relationship between cognitive skills and hearing performance in older adults; speech perception of older and younger adults when certain linguistic factors are manipulated; and age-related effects of processing accented speech in native and non-native speakers.

Summary: Infants born with congenital heart defects (CHD) experience unique pre- and post-surgical complications that impact their ability to develop skills to successfully feed orally. This session reviews the disruptions to oral feeding development in infants with CHD and offers strategies to help infants thrive in their feeding skills after surgery. Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic. Summary: This journal self-study course examines remote treatment for aphasia, a topic that several researchers explored at the 51st Clinical Aphasiology Conference (CAC) in North Carolina. Articles examine the effectiveness of telepractice delivery of three types of aphasia treatment: conversation group treatment, Combined Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech Treatment, and Sound Production Treatment. The articles compare outcomes of the treatments when administered remotely vs. in-person.
