Summary: Writing meaningful social communication goals can be difficult, but using a strengths-based framework can make it a bit easier. In this course – which is broken into six 5-minute activities – the presenter will utilize a goals rubric to help school SLPs write meaningful and measurable social communication goals that support independence and engagement as long-term objectives. Then the presenter will guide you through actionable steps to use the rubric to write student goals and reflect on the outcomes.

Summary: Dynamic assessment, which seeks to identify a child’s individual skills and learning potential, can be a useful but labor-intensive process. In this course – which is broken into six 5-minute activities – the presenter will demonstrate how you can efficiently collect data through dynamic assessment using the META (Match – Extend – Try it – Assess) Map tool to extend and expand on the student’s communicative strengths. Summary: In order to select the appropriate treatment techniques for oral and pharyngeal dysphagia in adults, clinicians need to understand the physiology of swallowing. This introductory course discusses the principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning as they relate to the effects of injury to the central nervous system and the potential results of swallowing intervention. The presenter discusses examples of neuromuscular treatment for pharyngeal dysphagia and gives tips on analyzing evidence and applying a theory-driven approach.

Summary: A thorough cranial nerve examination is an essential part of the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation of every patient. When performed, it is useful in the diagnosis of speech and swallowing disorders, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for development of a targeted, individualized treatment plan. This video course provides an overview of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the cranial nerve examination. Participants will receive detailed instructions for testing and interpreting findings of the cranial nerve examination. The course also describes common abnormalities observed for patients with impairment of cranial nerve function.

Summary: An information-rich videofluoroscopic assessment can help clinicians determine which components of the complex oropharyngeal swallow need to be targeted for intervention. Visualizing all of the elements that contribute to a well-integrated or disordered swallow mechanism requires an ordered and disciplined review. This video course demonstrates methods to enhance clinicians' ability to perform a videofluoroscopic assessment and discern the discrete elements of the oropharyngeal swallow. Participants can practice determining the integrity or disorder of the swallow mechanism by viewing and interpreting case study video.
