Summary: Morphological awareness (MA)-the ability to attend to and manipulate morphemes such as affixes and base words-impacts a variety of reading skills. All students, especially those with weak language and reading skills, can benefit from MA instruction to help them attend to and recognize frequently occurring morphemes in words they read, spell, and learn. This session discusses the implementation of MA instruction for at-risk and struggling readers in the elementary grades using high-utility morphemes through teacher-led and digital-based activities. A list of high-utility morphemes that teachers can use to choose instructional targets for each grade level is provided. This presentation also explores the impact of digital morphology instruction on student reading.

Summary: Collective bargaining efforts play an important role in addressing many important public policy issues facing audiologists and speech-language pathologists, such as advocating for manageable workloads, workplace conditions, better wages, job security, and professional recognition. This course shares perspectives from a group of audiologists who joined the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professions (UMMAP), a union made up of multiple bargaining units of health care employees spanning across Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health).

Summary: Motivation often declines as children reach adolescence. Poor motivation inhibits participation and engagement in language-based interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how intervention can be designed to increase client motivation to participate in therapy while improving language-based literacy skills. This session presents motivation and behavior change techniques based on self-determination theory. It also includes examples of how to integrate these techniques into interventions with adolescent clients to satisfy their need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence while simultaneously addressing language-based literacy deficits.

Summary: While clinicians may know the fundamentals of evidence-based practice (EBP), many struggle to implement EBP in real-world situations with their clients. Often, this is due to limited research, a lack of high-quality research, or the absence of a clear takeaway from external scientific literature. In this course, participants will learn more about these obstacles and strategies to overcome them. Learning how to navigate these barriers will assist clinicians in making patient-centered and evidence-based clinical decisions. This course is the third in a series of micro courses on Evidence-Based Decision-Making, which use clinical scenario activities to help you to sharpen your EBP skills.
