Summary: This course provides an overview of the essential elements of planning and implementing successful dysphagia intervention. Summary: Evaluating and treating children with selective mutism (SM) presents challenges. These children have the ability to speak but may not do so in social situations where they feel uncomfortable and are expected to speak. A substantial number of children with SM have speech-language deficits and vocal tension, affecting their ability to vocalize and verbalize. To determine a child’s actual communication abilities and plan appropriate treatment, it is important to conduct a comprehensive evaluation with expressive output. This webinar describes a validated evaluation procedure and treatment methods to improve vocal output, enhance meaningful verbalizations, and expand language in individuals with SM.

Summary: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can be life-changing for many individuals, but due to its complex and commercial nature, it also comes with a myriad of potential ethical concerns. Clinicians can improve AAC assessment and intervention outcomes for those they serve by being confident they are making ethically informed decisions about AAC use. This webinar uses case studies to discuss common ethical dilemmas encountered in the use of AAC, leaning on the ASHA Code of Ethics for support. Summary: This course focuses on emerging research and changing practices in the management of dysphagia as it relates to aspiration pneumonia prevention and oral care. The presenters review the contribution of oral biofilms to bacterial aspiration pneumonia and systemic health, and discuss the genesis and treatments for aspiration pneumonia. The course describes the national VA deployment of a pneumonia prevention initiative and provides practical instruction in the development of an oral care program participants can use to implement a program in their own facility.

Summary: This course provides a brief overview of the current diagnostic method and its limitations, followed by discussion and demonstration of effective objective and semi-automated speech measures for identifying acquired AOS in both stroke and progressive forms. Summary: Using videos and case studies, this session demonstrates how to identify, assess, and document appropriate treatment goals, strategies, and outcomes for adults with dysarthria. The session uses the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health classification system to evaluate clinical treatment approaches—including motor learning concepts—that address impairments of function, communication activity, and participation.
