Summary: This session provides practical guidelines for provision of collaborative, interprofessional services along the continuum of school-based service delivery. Summary: Regardless of their age, patients in critical and acute care settings may experience communication difficulties due to the nature of their illness and the medical interventions they require. This session discusses augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for these patients, including evaluation and intervention considerations, resources, and materials to support AAC service delivery.

Summary: In this activity, four recent SIG 10 articles are presented. First, Domsch, Stiritz, and Huff utilized a mixed-methods design to examine the cultural awareness of students in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) during and after a study-abroad experience. Next, Franca, Boyer, and Pegoraro-Krook explored activities designed to promote cultural and clinical competence in a collaboration between CSD programs in the United States and Brazil. Then, Veyvoda and Van Cleave reviewed the literature on service-learning and community-engaged learning, described how these approaches could be used in distance-learning modalities, and explored how doing so could be accomplished during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, Towson et al. studied the effectiveness of coaching paired with the use of a mixed-reality simulator as CSD students practiced interprofessional communication skills in role-play scenarios.

Summary: The focus on technology during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in turn, the lessening of in-person interactions, calls for attention to social-emotional learning (SEL) as well as academics. This course shares a method using the metacognitive approach, Story Grammar Marker, with selections of children's literature that target SEL competencies through a narrative development lens.

Summary: This session explores how hearing level, device use, and room acoustics alter the potential for children who are Deaf or hard of hearing to have auditory access to classroom instruction. The speaker focuses on how access to instruction for children who are who are Deaf or hard of hearing changes with social distancing and mask-wearing and shares creative solutions to real-life barriers to implementing strategies that improve communication.

Summary: This SIG 10 activity focuses on student perceptions and experiences. In the first article, the experiences of SLP graduate students who previously worked as Speech-Language Pathology Assistants are compared with students who did not come into their programs with such experience. Implications for prospective students and program development are discussed. Next, authors investigate experiences of students and graduates of clinical doctorate programs, including the application process, their career goals and outcomes, and their general reflections on their decision to pursue the doctor of speech-language pathology degree. Third, authors present an examination of SLPs’ perceptions of graduate students in CSD who speak with vocal fry (a low-pitched, grating voice quality). Finally, in a mixed-method study, graduate and undergraduate students participate in a learning-by-teaching experience in two CSD courses. Three years of data is presented.

Summary: This session shares easy-to-implement strategies for more diverse service delivery models, including classroom-based services. The speaker explores flexible scheduling examples, using the curriculum to target speech and language targets, and the art of collecting authentic data in integrated settings. Participants will leave this session with "use tomorrow" strategies as well as the confidence to make classroom-based service delivery work for clinicians and students.
