Summary: Despite advances in hearing technology and intervention, language, academic, and social outcomes in children with hearing loss generally lag behind those of their hearing counterparts. Providing differential diagnoses is challenging, given the cascading effects of auditory deprivation language delays. This presentation identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of effectively making differential diagnoses. Summary: This session describes how to work effectively within the constraints of school-based structures to improve outcomes for elementary school children on the autism spectrum. The speaker highlights key differences between a skills-based vs. supports-based approach to peer interaction in a school-based setting. In addition, she uses two case studies to walk through key elements of designing a supports-based approach—including goal-writing, activity selection, and strategy implementation.

Summary: The Exceptional Children Division, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), supports and fosters interprofessional practice between the disciplines of speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. This presentation outlines how a team began this work and used the principles of implementation science to promote best practice in districts/LEAs throughout North Carolina. Summary: SLPs who work in schools are encountering more students who may require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), but these professionals may not always feel they have the tools to adequately assess and implement interventions. This session shares tips for conducting AAC evaluations in the school setting and using dynamic assessment to guide language intervention. Summary: This session—a recorded session from ASHA’s 2020 Health Care Connect online conference—explores the incidence and common mechanisms of brain injury in children and adolescents and the potential effects of these injuries to cognition and communication. Using case studies, the speaker discusses methods to improve long-term outcomes for these youth through initial assessment and transition planning. This session is designed to accompany the 2020 Schools Connect online conference session Assessments and Interventions in the Schools for Youth With Brain Injury. Summary: The SLP scope of practice has expanded in recent years to include literacy; however, it can be difficult for school SLPs to carve out their role within the school literacy team. This course focuses on the relationship between the school SLP, reading specialist, and/or special education teacher and how SLPs can cultivate that relationship to provide unified interventions that promote school-wide student success. The speaker shares examples of how school-based SLPs have successfully integrated into the school literacy framework.
