Summary: Selecting and interpreting a CAPD test battery that is appropriate to the individual patient is critical to securing much-needed services and achieving positive outcomes. Many audiologists use a standardized, normative-scored CAPD test battery rather than a test battery driven by specific patient characteristics because they do not know how to appropriately select a comprehensive test battery or because of beliefs that testing cannot be performed for certain populations (e.g., children younger than age 7). This session will discuss tips for putting together patient-driven testing options, including how to administer and score them. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”
Presenter(s): Shelley L. Velleman, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex sensory-motor speech disorder that typically requires both intensive individualized intervention and systematic opportunities for generalization and carryover. CAS also has significant academic and functional impacts, especially on participation, language, and literacy. This session uses case studies to explore areas of need requiring different service delivery models in the school setting. The speaker discusses potential areas of collaboration to support the learning and full participation of children with CAS. This course is a recorded session from the 2020/2021 online conference “Practical Solutions for Elementary Assessment, Treatment, and Collaboration.”

Summary: This session addresses the connection between oral and written language as it applies to service delivery for school-age children. The speakers explore incorporating children’s literature in treatment, meeting states’ curricular standards, and using various service delivery models that support language intervention in schools.

Summary: Motor planning is an individual difference that impacts much more than motor skills, including social-emotional skills and speech and language development. It impacts areas like executive functioning and written narratives. This presentation discusses the components of motor planning, how to support clients with motor planning challenges, and strategies for discussing praxis with caregivers.

Summary: This session highlights recent advances in understanding language acquisition in children who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH), with an emphasis on the acquisition of sign languages (either on their own or alongside spoken languages). Speakers present advances in measurement, by introducing three new tools that are available for clinical use: the D-LEAT, the LAPT, and the ASL-CDI 2.0.

Summary: This session demonstrates how to use SUGAR, a method of language sampling analysis, for conducting and analyzing language samples more efficiently and effectively. The speaker shares free resources and a case study, during which participants can use the SUGAR framework to analyze a language sample, interpret the results, select intervention targets, and write curriculum relevant goals. This course is a recorded session from the 2022/2023 online conference "Assessment, Eligibility, and Dismissal in Schools: Strategies, Tools, and Decision-Making." Content disclosure: This session focuses on the SUGAR method of language sampling analysis.

Summary: This session presents a review of the empirical uses of experimenter-created morphological awareness assessment tasks found in recent literature. The presenter summarizes assessments by type of morphemes assessed, type of morphological task employed, intended age ranges, and possible administration modes. The goal of the presentation is to provide clinicians with the relevant information from recent morphological awareness assessment literature for them to feel confident in selecting morphological awareness assessments for their own clients.

Summary: Language assessment in children who are deaf or hard of hearing often focuses on language outcomes without a precise characterization of the child's language learning history. Speech-language pathologists and other early interventionists need support in ensuring that the child's cumulative experience with linguistic input (or lack thereof) is also captured. This session presents a practical approach for this process that follows emerging research on language access profiles. This course is a recorded technical session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 4064V).
