Summary: This webinar will walk SLPs through the procedures used in flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES; also known as fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) to evaluate patients with dysphagia. Summary: This webinar will discuss the anatomical, physiological, neurological, and cognitive factors that affect the speech intelligibility of children and adolescents with Down syndrome. Although there are similarities among people who have this genetic disorder, evaluation and treatment are highly individualized based on specific factors that influence a particular individual’s speech. The speaker will discuss evaluation and treatment planning, including forms that clinicians can use right away in their own practice.

Summary: Voice disorders are a prevalent and persistent problem in older adults. As the number of people over age 65 continues to increase, SLPs likely will see a growing demand for their services to treat age-related communication problems, including disorders related to the “aging voice.” This webinar will explore the typical age-related changes in each of the three major subsystems involved with voice production (respiratory, laryngeal, and resonatory) and explain how these changes affect vocal quality and ability. The presenters also will discuss appropriate assessment and intervention options, providing an overview of medical, surgical, and behavioral treatments.

Summary: This course presents a practical framework for cognitive rehabilitation for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Clinicians can use the framework to identify functional treatments that are evidence-based, matched to individualized patient needs, and feasible given the time and resource constraints of the current health care environment. The course explores specific cognitive rehabilitation interventions that patients with a brain injury may find particularly valuable and motivating. The presenters use case studies to discuss how to write functional goals and identify optimum outcome measures.

Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.

Summary: Inadequate oral hygiene practices can contribute to or result in severe localized and systemic illnesses, significantly altering the health status and well-being of older adults. Care providers must recognize symptoms, conditions, and their potential consequences and elevate routine oral hygiene care to oral infection control programs.
