Summary: This presentation discusses how faculty members can incorporate inclusive teaching methods to promote increased accessibility for a range of students with diverse learning needs. Presenters describe the main tenets of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and ways that instructors can reflect on their teaching practices to incorporate elements of UDL into their courses through incremental pedagogical changes.

Summary: Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it's not more work, it is the work. This course discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and SLP services and provides practical ideas for doing so.

Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic. This course provides the clinician with a review of holistic assessments and health literacy approaches that will empower the patient to make informed decisions. Summary: Professional fatigue and self-care are critical issues for audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Without attention and intervention, professional fatigue can negatively impact a professional’s home life, relationships, personal well-being, work life, and/or ability to deliver person-centered care. This course explores the concepts of empathy, emotional contagion, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, and burnout as they relate to the professions and offers tips to avoid and address these challenges.

Summary: The experience of trauma or re-traumatization during a person's rehab stay can result in physical, psychological, and emotional health conditions, and can also impede therapeutic rapport, the patient's feelings of safety, and the overall healing and recovery process. This course examines trauma-informed care and its relevancy within SLP practice and discusses ways to implement practical methods of providing trauma-informed care in a health care setting.

Summary: This session is designed for SLPs from any work setting who are considering serving, or have been asked to serve, as an expert witness. The speakers introduce the role of an expert witness, in contrast to the role of a fact witness, and review the qualifications and distinctive roles and responsibilities of an expert witness, with a focus on relevant laws (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, IDEA, and ADA). The session—a recorded session from ASHA’s 2020 Private Practice Connect online conference—includes discussion of oral and written communication best practices, as they are fundamental to the role of an expert witness. The speakers also use case studies to highlight key concepts.
