Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of acquired disability in childhood, and students with TBI often experience challenges that fall within the SLP scope of practice. Summary: In this session, the authors briefly review the literature on the developmental risks and auditory effects of pediatric unilateral hearing loss. Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.

Summary: Medicare beneficiaries are an important patient population to consider when developing a business model, and SLPs in private practice need to know how to enroll in and bill Medicare to ensure they are compliant with federal law. This course walks through the basics of Medicare credentialing, coding and billing, and documentation to ensure successful processing of claims and medical records that will stand up to scrutiny if audited.

Summary: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex sensory-motor speech disorder that typically requires both intensive individualized intervention and systematic opportunities for generalization and carryover. CAS also has significant academic and functional impacts, especially on participation, language, and literacy.
