Summary: The quality of online medical information can conflict with evidence-based research. Tinnitus is a target for misinformation and bogus treatments due to its prevalence and lack of objective treatments. This presentation discusses a study that assessed how people with and without tinnitus respond to online misinformation regarding tinnitus and determined whether a counseling session regarding causes and management of tinnitus affected susceptibility to misinformation. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.
Presenter(s): Blair Richlin, MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS AVEd, TSSLD
Credit(s): PDHs: 0.5, ASHA CEUs*: 0.05
Summary: This session is a case study that focuses on patients and families with diagnosed hearing loss and additional disabilities who participated in aural habilitation/rehabilitation and speech/language intervention focusing on development of listening and spoken language skills with support of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).
Presenter(s): Alliete R. Alfano, PhD, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT; Jenna Voss, PhD, CED, LSLS Cert. AVEd

Summary: Audiologists and SLPs are critical team members who can support listening and spoken language outcomes for students who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH). This webinar discusses auditory-verbal intervention as an approach for learners who are DHH and learning to listen and/or talk. The presenters explore foundational elements critical for success in auditory-verbal intervention, including audiologic assessment and management, caregiver engagement, and support from interprofessional teams.

Summary: This session illustrates how telehealth/telepractice can enable professionals to make their services more easily accessible to clients with cochlear implants who are in poor health or live in remote areas where travel is a challenge. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): Donna Geffner, PhD, CCC-A/SLP; Deborah Ross-Swain, EdD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Comprehensive management and treatment for children with CAPDs necessitates effective evaluation of co-morbidities and other related factors. This session will examine language and other deficits that often affect kids with CAPDs, including those in reading, receptive language, higher-order language, executive functions, written language, and social/emotional behaviors. The speakers will discuss the relevant assessments that are available to contribute to a holistic evaluation to inform management and treatment decisions. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”

Summary: This journal self-study course compares language performance in children with and without cochlear implants from preschool to 6th grade. The articles examine levels of language from phonology to prosody, offering insights into areas of strength and weakness as well as clinical directions. The first article examines consonant acquisition patterns based on hearing exposure. The second and third articles compare morphosyntactic, lexical, and phonological awareness profiles, the effect of literacy on each language skill, and types of errors produced in school-age children with and without cochlear implants. The fourth article explores differences in word-learning strategies that could affect lexical development and offers clinical suggestions based on these findings. The final article explores children’s abilities to discriminate emotional intent based on suprasegmental characteristics in the speech signal.
Presenter(s): Andrea Warner-Czyz, PhD, CCC-A; Melissa Sweeney, MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT

Summary: Children and adults who use cochlear implants and have additional exceptionalities present challenges in diagnostic testing and therapeutic intervention for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. This session reviews current research on communication and quality of life in this population, while also highlighting real-world clinical practices in assessing, treating, and defining success in these patients. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. The session was developed by, and presenters invited by, Audiology Implantables.
Presenter(s): Stephanie DeAnda, PhD, CCC-SLP; Matthew Hall, PhD; Naomi Caselli, PhD

Summary: This session highlights recent advances in understanding language acquisition in children who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH), with an emphasis on the acquisition of sign languages (either on their own or alongside spoken languages). Speakers present advances in measurement, by introducing three new tools that are available for clinical use: the D-LEAT, the LAPT, and the ASL-CDI 2.0.
Presenter(s): Elizabeth Adams Costa, PhD
Credit(s): PDHs: 1.0, ASHA CEUs*: 0.1
Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.
