Summary: Professional fatigue and self-care are critical issues for audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Without attention and intervention, professional fatigue can negatively impact a professional’s home life, relationships, personal well-being, work life, and/or ability to deliver person-centered care. This course explores the concepts of empathy, emotional contagion, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, and burnout as they relate to the professions and offers tips to avoid and address these challenges.

Summary: In this course, two experts in adult learning present proven strategies to help presenters deliver more impactful learning experiences—ones that effectively support a learner’s ability to gain and apply new knowledge or skills. Summary: This course includes three recorded sessions from the 2016 online conference "Maximizing Functional Outcomes for Patients With Dementia." These sessions focus on working with all the stakeholders involved in treating patients with dementia – the individual, family members and other caregivers, and all the health care professionals involved in the person’s care. Sessions discuss caregiver counseling and support, helping patients with hearing loss, and a specific model for interdisciplinary care. The conference included a total of 13 sessions, with the broad goal of describing a range of evidence-based clinical care techniques to get to the heart of patient-centered dementia care.

Summary: Streamed audio has grown from a technological novelty into a distinct listening environment for hearing aid users. This presents a unique listening environment that can prove difficult to verify, as streamed audio is not an external stimulus and cannot be verified using conventional methods. This session describes a new and accessible verification method aimed at the streamed audio environment, ensuring that hearing aid users receive optimal benefit in their digital soundscape.

Summary: The global COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a level of disruption into our personal and professional lives that was previously unimaginable. How we respond will be a deciding factor for the future success of our practices. This session will explore how to embrace change and use this unique opportunity to rethink how we provide and promote our services. The speaker will discuss specific ways audiologists who operate private practices can clearly articulate their distinctive role in the hearing health marketplace and be prepared for future interruptions such as pandemics, big box stores, online retailers, and personal indecision.

Summary: Prior to 2020, a remote model of hearing health care had been applied primarily to remote populations and/or limited to hearing screening and counseling services. Now, in the face of a global pandemic that makes face-to-face services risky, there has been an urgent demand for more information about teleaudiology. This session will review the evolution of teleaudiology, including provider and patient attitudes concerning the perceived benefits, disadvantages, and outcomes associated with remote audiologic care. The speaker will describe an existing, commercial, patient-centered teleaudiology model of hearing health care that is designed to increase accessibility and reduce cost while maintaining the audiologist’s central role as a critical component of care throughout the patient journey.
