Summary: This course includes five recorded sessions from the 2016 online conference “Maximizing Functional Outcomes for Patients With Dementia.” These sessions focus on key components of functional assessment and treatment of dementia within the constraints of current service delivery models. Summary: Aging produces predictable and specific changes to the human respiratory and digestive systems and predisposes older people to more severe effects of—and more protracted limitations secondary to—diseases and surgical procedures. This session provides much-needed, clinically translatable information about aging-related respiratory and digestive system changes and how they affect swallowing diagnosis and treatment. The session also reviews the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (sepsis) as a model of an atypical dysphagia-producing illness. Summary: Children and adults who use cochlear implants and have additional exceptionalities present challenges in diagnostic testing and therapeutic intervention for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Summary: Medicare beneficiaries are an important patient population to consider when developing a business model, and SLPs in private practice need to know how to enroll in and bill Medicare to ensure they are compliant with federal law. This course walks through the basics of Medicare credentialing, coding and billing, and documentation to ensure successful processing of claims and medical records that will stand up to scrutiny if audited.
