Summary: It is difficult to know in young children whether language delays are transient or will lead to chronic delays and cascading difficulties in academic language, reading, and writing. This session explores assessment methods that make use of evidence regarding the difference between delay and disorder to allow clinicians to make this distinction in daily practice. Summary: Phonological awareness is a foundational skill for successful reading and spelling. Preschoolers with speech sound disorders are at risk for deficits in phonological awareness, and this risk is multiplied by factors such as language disorders and low socioeconomic status. Focusing on orthographic (printed) cues, this session discusses intervention techniques that improve speech intelligibility in preschoolers while simultaneously building phonological awareness. Summary: This course includes five recorded sessions from the 2018 online conference “Children With Autism: Matching Interventions to Communication Needs.” Taken together, these sessions highlight practical interventions to support school-age students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), from video modeling to narrative text to behavior-based interventions. The conference included a total of 13 sessions, with the broad goal of presenting current best practices in intervention for school-age students with ASD. Conference sessions focused on tips and strategies SLPs can use to choose the most appropriate interventions for each child using an evidence-based approach that balances family preferences, research, and clinical judgment/expertise.

Summary: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) exist along a spectrum of severity and abilities, with many involving both the motoric and the phonological system. As a result, many children with SSDs experience related issues with the phonological skills needed for word reading and spelling. This session reviews the Simple Views of Reading and of Writing and connects those theories to assessment practices. The speaker discusses ideas for adapting speech sound intervention activities to include phonological awareness, decoding, and spelling.

Summary: This course explores an effective technique for building complex narrative language and thought. By "pressing pause," SLPs and students can take time to talk about and connect "thoughts" (mental states) to elements of story grammar such as initiating events, feelings, and plans. This process is integral for discovering intentions and motivations, perspective-taking, thinking critically, solving problems, and participating in social situations. Speakers also discuss a powerful way to teach "inference" using film "jump cuts."

Summary: Social communication involves the integration of language processing, pragmatics, and social and emotional learning, and is a challenge for children who present with developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and social communication disorder. This session presents a bibliotherapeutic intervention approach that SLPs can implement within a plan-do-review format. This practical approach utilizes brief (~15 minutes) story sharing, story enactment, and journaling activities. The speakers present preliminary efficacy data for the intervention approach as well as provide materials and resources for its implementation.
