Summary: This course addresses assessment standards for confident diagnosis of exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) for clinicians across settings. Speakers discuss differential diagnoses and complex, co-occurring conditions as well as provide an update on terminology used to describe variants of what used to be commonly known as paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM). The speakers use case examples and research summaries to discuss current, evidence-based, behavioral methods for remediation and resolution of these conditions. Summary: This journal self-study includes select papers that were presented at the 2017 Clinical Aphasiology Conference in Snowbird, Utah. Summary: This session describes how to work effectively within the constraints of school-based structures to improve outcomes for elementary school children on the autism spectrum. Summary: Writing meaningful social communication goals can be difficult, but using a strengths-based framework can make it a bit easier. In this course – which is broken into six 5-minute activities – the presenter will utilize a goals rubric to help school SLPs write meaningful and measurable social communication goals that support independence and engagement as long-term objectives. Then the presenter will guide you through actionable steps to use the rubric to write student goals and reflect on the outcomes.

Summary: The Exceptional Children Division, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), supports and fosters interprofessional practice between the disciplines of speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. This presentation outlines how a team began this work and used the principles of implementation science to promote best practice in districts/LEAs throughout North Carolina. Summary: SLPs who work in schools are encountering more students who may require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), but these professionals may not always feel they have the tools to adequately assess and implement interventions. This session shares tips for conducting AAC evaluations in the school setting and using dynamic assessment to guide language intervention. Summary: This activity focuses on the childhood maltreatment consequences on social pragmatic communication. Based on a complex family and social conception of neglect, a logical model illustrating public health services for children experiencing neglect is proposed. The role of speech-language pathology in prevention, policy, and practice is outlined. The importance of assessing the narrative language of children exposed to complex trauma is also emphasized.
