Summary: This session discusses auditory brainstem implants (ABI) as an option for individuals who typically cannot benefit from conventional amplification or cochlear implants as they don't have an implantable cochlea or functioning 8th nerve. The session describes the ABI journey from candidacy to surgery to activation and follow-up. The speaker discusses the history of ABI, anatomy of the auditory pathway, interprofessional education and interprofessional practice related to ABI, and ABI clinical trial data.

Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.

Summary: There has been a renewed interest in the provision of aural rehabilitation (AR) services as part of patient-centered hearing health care. Aural rehabilitation is a holistic approach to the management of hearing loss that may include patient education, fitting of devices, and auditory training exercises. Although audiologists may recognize the benefits of comprehensive AR, questions may remain about how to measure functional outcomes of these services. This course reviews functional outcome assessments for aural rehabilitation and how to incorporate these measures into everyday practice to enhance patient success.

Summary: Vestibular loss can co-occur with hearing loss. One functional effect of vestibular loss is decreased dynamic visual acuity. There is some speculation that vestibular loss can also affect reading and/or reading acuity. This presentation outlines the relationship between vestibular loss and both dynamic and static visual acuity and its possible effect on reading and other daily activities. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. The session was developed by, and presenters invited by, Hearing, Tinnitus, and Vestibular Science.

Summary: Selecting and interpreting a CAPD test battery that is appropriate to the individual patient is critical to securing much-needed services and achieving positive outcomes. Many audiologists use a standardized, normative-scored CAPD test battery rather than a test battery driven by specific patient characteristics because they do not know how to appropriately select a comprehensive test battery or because of beliefs that testing cannot be performed for certain populations (e.g., children younger than age 7). This session will discuss tips for putting together patient-driven testing options, including how to administer and score them. Summary: Young musicians are exposed to traumatic sound levels that might increase their risk for tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Music and noise are known environmental risk factors for tinnitus and NIHL. This course examines a hypothesis that genetic variants might further explain clinical heterogeneity in tinnitus and NIHL.

Summary: Hundreds of medications commonly prescribed for anticancer treatments and some infections are known to cause auditory and/or vestibular dysfunction, known as ototoxicity. This course discusses early detection of ototoxicity through increased awareness, leveraging current tools, and clinical practice approaches for serial monitoring, all of which can provide care teams opportunities to identify adverse effects, modify treatment plans to mitigate hearing loss, and utilize individualized interventions. The speaker discusses strategies for preventing or minimizing cochlear damage to preserve quality of life for patients receiving treatment and to reduce the societal burden of hearing loss.

Summary: This course focuses on social-emotional learning milestones and current trends in research regarding social-emotional learning for children who are deaf or hard of hearing relative to peers with typical hearing. A research team reports on findings from a survey of caregivers of children with hearing loss regarding their knowledge, ratings, and facilitation of social-emotional learning in their children.

Summary: The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) was established to develop evidence-based guidelines for supporting infants and young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. In 2019, the JCIH published an updated position statement based on expertise from stakeholder groups – including audiologists, SLPs, pediatricians, early intervention providers, otolaryngologists, and professionals from the Deaf community. This course describes the major changes in the JCIH position statement as well as clinical implications for any professional involved in serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. This course – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 9: Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood.

Summary: This course presents a methodology that allows audiologists to provide (central) auditory processing testing remotely. The course discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and pitfalls of remote testing as well as technology and other requirements. The course is one in a set of practical programs that address specific aspects of remote practice in audiology.
