Summary: This course explores how health disparities and systems of oppression are affecting clinical settings and clinical outcomes for communication and swallowing services delivered to individuals of advanced age. Summary: This presentation describes the case of a 48-year-old female presenting with vertigo and disequilibrium consistent with mal de debarquement (MdDS) following a weeklong vacation cruise. MRI images, audiometric, and vestibular results are presented, as well as an in-depth review of MdDS and Chiari malformation and their impact on vestibular function and quality of life.

Summary: The articles in this course present models for increasing equity and inclusion across our discipline. Girolamo and Ghali introduce a student-led grassroots initiative that supports minority students at all levels. Mohapatra and Mohan propose a model for increasing student diversity and inclusion based on successful programs from other health-related disciplines. Finally, Mishra et al. examine three challenges that faculty of color face: cultural competency, imposter syndrome, and racial microaggressions.

Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic. This course provides the clinician with a review of holistic assessments and health literacy approaches that will empower the patient to make informed decisions.
