Summary: This course presents a practical framework for cognitive rehabilitation for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Clinicians can use the framework to identify functional treatments that are evidence-based, matched to individualized patient needs, and feasible given the time and resource constraints of the current health care environment. The course explores specific cognitive rehabilitation interventions that patients with a brain injury may find particularly valuable and motivating. The presenters use case studies to discuss how to write functional goals and identify optimum outcome measures.

Summary: Autism can present quite differently in boys and girls, and research demonstrates that many girls and women are being misdiagnosed or missed entirely. In this recorded session from ASHA’s 2021 Schools Connect online conference, the presenter explores the subtle presentation of autism in general and the specific ways that girls and women can present. Summary: Evaluating and treating children with selective mutism (SM) presents challenges. These children have the ability to speak but may not do so in social situations where they feel uncomfortable and are expected to speak. A substantial number of children with SM have speech-language deficits and vocal tension, affecting their ability to vocalize and verbalize. To determine a child’s actual communication abilities and plan appropriate treatment, it is important to conduct a comprehensive evaluation with expressive output. This webinar describes a validated evaluation procedure and treatment methods to improve vocal output, enhance meaningful verbalizations, and expand language in individuals with SM.

Am I committing them? How do they impact the person who experiences them? This course illuminates these concepts and guides us through purposeful reflection activities that reduce the likelihood of committing microaggressions, ensuring a safer environment for our colleagues and clients, and thereby facilitating more effective communication.
