Summary: Many older adults experience a growing number of comorbidities and functional limitations as they age. An individual’s ability and willingness to access hearing care is influenced not only by the severity of his or her hearing loss but also by other health, socioeconomic, and environmental factors. This session discusses recent research on patient outcomes as well as reviews lessons learned from a human factors approach to hearing care for older adults, including addressing common comorbid conditions.

Summary: By conducting ethnographic interviews during assessment, clinicians can develop more personalized and effective treatment plans that truly fit the needs of the patient, client, or student. This course introduces ethnographic interviewing and explains how it can elicit culturally relevant information about a child's communication development from a family member's perspective, which is critical in determining a disorder and developing a more tailored and effective treatment plan.

Summary: This session is a clinical tutorial that uses cases examples to integrate the practices of language sample analysis and fluency assessment. It focuses on the implementation of fluency codes in narrative retell language samples. Speakers provide information on how to identify and accurately code specific types of disfluencies within a narrative retell language sample. The tutorial provides clinicians with practical tools to use in particular narrative retell language samples to assess fluency and language production skills in bilingual and monolingual children. To make appropriate diagnostic decisions when there are few available measures, SLPs must conduct assessments that have good classification accuracy and that are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
