Summary: Many older adults experience a growing number of comorbidities and functional limitations as they age. An individual’s ability and willingness to access hearing care is influenced not only by the severity of his or her hearing loss but also by other health, socioeconomic, and environmental factors. This session discusses recent research on patient outcomes as well as reviews lessons learned from a human factors approach to hearing care for older adults, including addressing common comorbid conditions.

Summary: SLPs who work in schools are encountering more students who may require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), but these professionals may not always feel they have the tools to adequately assess and implement interventions. Summary: This course describes the various ways that a head and neck cancer diagnosis can impact mental health, and ways to identify when a patient may need to seek professional help from a mental health specialist. The speaker highlights how a speech-language pathologist can assist in the detection of a potential mental health disorder through use of mental health screenings and head-and-neck-specific quality-of-life measures, and discusses considerations for addressing mental health and effectively navigating challenges that may impede success during treatment and/or rehabilitation.

Summary: This session presents a study of 19 children ages 5-7 with inaccurate /r/ who were followed every 3 months until they acquired /r/ or turned 8 years old, whichever came first. Acquisition was determined for three separate allophones of /r/: vocalic, prevocalic, and postvocalic.

Summary: This session will examine the diagnosis and treatment of persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD). The session will explore the recently defined criteria for the presentation and symptoms of the disorder as well as describe current and emerging research that is helping clinicians and researchers better understand it. The speaker will also discuss how chronic co-morbid disorders such as migraine and Meniere’s disease should be factored into the treatment of this disorder.
