Summary: SLPs who work with infants and children with feeding and swallowing disorders are involved in high-risk patient care. Our knowledge base is broad in some aspects of feeding and swallowing evaluation and management. However, it is critical that we expand our horizons to facilitate the best possible functional outcomes for the whole child and family. This session discusses challenges for the future as a combination of art and science as well as highlights areas of consensus and controversy in the many facets of practice that encompass pediatric feeding and swallowing. Summary: A culturally responsive approach to support clients and families from all backgrounds begins with understanding and meeting them where they are. This session explores assessing the mealtime emotional climate for group and interpersonal dynamics between family members, supporting family members and young children's autonomy and self-regulation at mealtimes, and a diagnostic battery that will help produce culturally responsive treatment recommendations and parent education.

Summary: It is commonly understood that better outcomes for management and treatment of hearing loss can be linked to greater knowledge and acceptance of the condition by the patient/client/student and their families. Knowledge is power. However, often individuals and their families do not have access to an impartial site hosting a variety of resources for review. This presentation discusses the need and development of an accessible and neutral site where individuals and their families can access diverse information and a variety of literature around topics related to hearing loss. It will also cover the steps for the development of a cultural and informational center, including tips on fundraising and overall management.

Summary: Early childhood is a critical period for auditory, language, and cognitive development, and early identification of permanent hearing loss provides the opportunity for children to receive appropriate and timely intervention and educational services. When children are identified late, they are at increased risk of permanent speech, language, and educational delays. Summary: This session introduces a language intervention program for middle and high school students-Philosophy for Adolescents-that is designed to support critical thinking, narrative and expository discourse, and the use of complex syntax and literate vocabulary such as abstract nouns and metacognitive verbs. The speaker discusses and demonstrates intervention using Philosophy for Adolescents through role-playing activities that engage participants as they work through a lesson in pairs or small groups.
