Summary: This course focuses on emerging research and changing practices in the management of dysphagia as it relates to aspiration pneumonia prevention and oral care. The presenters review the contribution of oral biofilms to bacterial aspiration pneumonia and systemic health, and discuss the genesis and treatments for aspiration pneumonia. Summary: Aging produces predictable and specific changes to the human respiratory and digestive systems and predisposes older people to more severe effects of—and more protracted limitations secondary to—diseases and surgical procedures. Summary: This session will provide information to assist clinicians in making informed, evidence-based clinical decisions about CAPD assessment and intervention. For example, a considerable body of research has demonstrated the efficiency of individual central auditory tests and test batteries based on performance of individuals – including children – with confirmed CANS lesions. Similarly, there is substantial evidence that auditory training can be an effective treatment for central auditory processing deficits. This session will provide an overview of research support for existing and emerging assessment and treatment practices.
