Summary: This session introduces a language intervention program for middle and high school students-Philosophy for Adolescents-that is designed to support critical thinking, narrative and expository discourse, and the use of complex syntax and literate vocabulary such as abstract nouns and metacognitive verbs. Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.

Summary: This course focuses on a meaning-based approach to language assessment and intervention for intentional communication skills in young children. The nonlinguistic and linguistic context support meaning-driven communication expressed with language form from the child. Summary: School-based SLPs who work with African American children can feel underprepared to properly evaluate their language abilities. This webinar explores variation in narrative practices common within AAE-speaking communities. The presenters discuss widely held beliefs about narrative language and its variation, how these beliefs affect clinical practice, and insights from research into how we can expand our narrative language assessment practices to be more inclusive of culturally based narrative variation.

Summary: This on demand webinar focuses on case examples that demonstrate a language-based approach to managing echolalia, from delayed echolalia to self-generated language. Using video clips and language sample excerpts, the speakers describe the stages of gestalt language development, illustrate the varieties of echolalia, and review case examples of the successful use of the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) protocol to support gestalt language development in three individuals. The speakers also propose transparent terminology that can be used to help explain NLA to colleagues and families.
