Summary: This session explores effective techniques and resources to help children with selective mutism (SM), an anxiety-based disorder that significantly impacts a child's ability to speak in certain contexts, make progress in school and beyond. The speaker reviews myths and facts about SM and explores the SLP's role in working with children with this disorder. Summary: Far too often, current learning priorities keep children and young adults focused on daily work, grades, and performance, creating a disconnect between habit mastery and the long-term needs of their future self. This session presents effective and evidence-based strategies to improve children's abilities to envision and execute goal-directed and future-focused actions. Summary: This session discusses auditory brainstem implants (ABI) as an option for individuals who typically cannot benefit from conventional amplification or cochlear implants as they don't have an implantable cochlea or functioning 8th nerve. The session describes the ABI journey from candidacy to surgery to activation and follow-up. The speaker discusses the history of ABI, anatomy of the auditory pathway, interprofessional education and interprofessional practice related to ABI, and ABI clinical trial data.

Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.

Summary: Individuals with hearing loss experience negative psychosocial consequences such as distress, depression, and loneliness. If they also experience excessive negative emotional responses (i.e., confusion, frustration, anger) or reduced positive emotional responses (i.e., happiness) compared to listeners with normal hearing, they might be unmotivated to approach communication situations. This course describes a study whose purpose was to determine the feasibility of using facial expressions to measure emotional responses.
