Summary: SLPs are increasingly involved in the care of patients with head and neck cancer. While preventative dysphagia services are accepted as standard of care, many clinicians don't have the background in this population to determine how to best evaluate and treat patients prior to radiation. This on demand webinar covers what clinicians need to know to provide prehabilitative care-from justification to assessment to treatment to working within the multidisciplinary cancer care team.

Summary: This session provides tools for evaluating the picture books you currently use, equips you with arguments for why it is ethically important to use representative picture books and other materials, and helps you identify resources to develop a bookshelf that is aligned with your caseload composition. In addition, the presenters describe programs and strategies for implementing these selection practices into your everyday process.

Summary: This on demand webinar will explore the use of videostroboscopy and videoendoscopy to inform assessment and management of voice disorders (e.g., identification of physical factors, vocal technique factors, hygiene issues, stimulability testing, etc.). The speakers will describe stroboscopic technique, including scientific underpinnings and limitations, as well as discuss rating forms/scales, assessment protocols, and practice ratings to support clinicians’ decision-making regarding videostroboscopy. The webinar will also include a practice activity. This webinar – part of the SIGnatureSeries – was developed by SIG 3: Voice and Upper Airway Disorders.

Summary: In this course, two experts in adult learning present proven strategies to help presenters deliver more impactful learning experiences—ones that effectively support a learner’s ability to gain and apply new knowledge or skills. Designed to be used during presentation development, the course explores key takeaways from the science of adult learning (andragogy), highlighting methods that support learning and those that hinder it. The speakers offer practical tips and strategies that can be integrated into presentations of any kind.

Summary: This on demand webinar will discuss the core elements of the writing process to inform SLPs’ work with school-age children and adolescents with and without developmental language disorders. The speaker will highlight theoretical frameworks and current research that speak to the acquisition and improvement of cognitive, linguistic, and motor skills that are required for writing. This is a companion webinar to the “Fundamentals of Assessing Writing Samples” webinar.

Summary: This session discusses practical strategies to adapt speech sound disorder assessment, treatment, and collaborative practices to appropriately determine educational need in line with federal and state laws and regulations. The speaker reviews three case studies of elementary-age children who have an impairment in speech sound production: one in which a student exhibits academic need, one in which a student exhibits social-emotional need, and one in which a student exhibits neither. This course is a recorded session from the 2020/2021 online conference “Practical Solutions for Elementary Assessment, Treatment, and Collaboration.”
Presenter(s): Gail D. Chermak, PhD, CCC-A

Summary: The recommended practices for diagnosis and intervention for central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) are dynamic, undergoing review and refinement as new research emerges. These recommended practices have been developed by groups like the American Academy of Audiology and ASHA, with careful discussion and consideration of points of disagreement. Nonetheless, a number of controversial assertions and practice recommendations continue to appear in the literature. This session will examine a number of these issues, with a focus on highlighting the current state of the evidence supporting best clinical practices and decision-making. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”
Presenter(s): Bonnie Brinton, PhD, CCC-SLP; Martin Fujiki, PhD, CCC-SLP

Summary: Social communication involves the integration of language processing, pragmatics, and social and emotional learning, and is a challenge for children who present with developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and social communication disorder. This session presents a bibliotherapeutic intervention approach that SLPs can implement within a plan-do-review format. This practical approach utilizes brief (~15 minutes) story sharing, story enactment, and journaling activities. The speakers present preliminary efficacy data for the intervention approach as well as provide materials and resources for its implementation. This course is a recorded session from the 2020/2021 online conference “Practical Solutions for Elementary Assessment, Treatment, and Collaboration.”

Summary: Speech-language pathologists recognize that the students they serve have unique strengths and challenges. However, it can be difficult to use a strengths-based approach when eligibility determination and program planning usually focus on what students can't do. It is only when we acknowledge students' assets and resources that we can support them in pursuing their life aspirations. This on demand webinar explores tools for assessment, intervention, and post-secondary planning to help SLPs leverage students' strengths to support areas of need during the IEP process.
