Summary: This course explores Innovating & Situating Practice in Rich Environments (InSPiRE), a novel approach to aphasia intervention. InSPiRE works with clinicians to recognize discourse patterns typical of restricted and rich environments and to apply discourse practices strategically, both to enrich clinical activities and to promote improved communication between individuals with aphasia and their everyday communication partners. The speakers discuss interactional research and practical strategies for topic management, contingent responses, shaping conversational narratives, creative use of collaborative referencing techniques, and other methods for creating rich communicative environments. This course – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 2: Neurogenic Communication Disorders.

Summary: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex sensory-motor speech disorder that typically requires both intensive individualized intervention and systematic opportunities for generalization and carryover. CAS also has significant academic and functional impacts, especially on participation, language, and literacy. This session uses case studies to explore areas of need requiring different service delivery models in the school setting. Summary: Concussion - or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) - is a unique injury that is different from more severe brain injury, and addressing the associated cognitive deficits requires personalized, targeted interventions These articles discuss research and practical implications for the management of cognitive symptoms of mTBI, including defining the role of the SLP on interdisciplinary management teams, exploring specific assessment and treatment strategies, and emphasizing functional, personalized goals. The articles are from a 2021 American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology forum "Interdisciplinary Management of Concussion or Mild TBI." The articles provide evidence and strategies to increase clinician confidence and effectiveness when working with individuals with concussion or mTBI.

Summary: This session reviews the emerging evidence of neurological manifestations of COVID-19 and identifies how SLPs can use their unique position to maximize patient outcomes-whether as a member of an interdisciplinary team or as a solo provider. The session strives to increase clinicians' confidence in their abilities to: identify common cognitive-communication symptoms for patients who have recovered from COVID-19, and evaluate and treat with an individualized, patient-centered approach.
