Summary: This session discusses practical strategies to adapt speech sound disorder assessment, treatment, and collaborative practices to appropriately determine educational need in line with federal and state laws and regulations. Summary: SLPs have noted the diagnostic challenge of distinguishing between the clinical indicators of language disorder, language delay based on the impacts of being reared in poverty, and the linguistic variation of students who speak African American English (AAE). This session discusses evidence-based assessment and treatment practices that SLPs can utilize when working with speakers of AAE and other nonmainstream dialects to help them identify students with true language and literacy disorders and provide needed interventions in a timely manner.

Summary: This session covers a unique case of bilateral temporal bone fractures: one that spares the otic capsule yet presents with a large sensorineural component. The speaker describes the anatomy and physiology of the temporal bone to provide background information about potential structures that can be damaged in a fracture as well as explain the varying etiologies of temporal bone fractures (TBF). In addition, this session discusses possible outcomes from a TBF in relation to hearing loss and facial nerve function and potential implications for treatment, including cochlear implantation.
