Summary: This journal self-study course highlights the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with aphasia, patients with cognitive communication impairments, and patient-provider communication. Summary: Emerging treatment approaches for age-related hearing loss include alternative interventions aimed at ameliorating symptoms and slowing down or even preventing hearing loss, in contrast with current treatment approaches, which focus primarily on amplification and communication strategies. This session will explore up-and-coming approaches, such as pre-clinical investigation of hormones (e.g., Aldosterone) correlated with auditory function; medicinal-related interventions; and challenges to timelines to bring new treatments to market.

Summary: A thorough cranial nerve examination is an essential part of the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation of every patient. When performed, it is useful in the diagnosis of speech and swallowing disorders, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for development of a targeted, individualized treatment plan. This video course provides an overview of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the cranial nerve examination. Participants will receive detailed instructions for testing and interpreting findings of the cranial nerve examination. Summary: This session covers a unique case of bilateral temporal bone fractures: one that spares the otic capsule yet presents with a large sensorineural component. The speaker describes the anatomy and physiology of the temporal bone to provide background information about potential structures that can be damaged in a fracture as well as explain the varying etiologies of temporal bone fractures (TBF). In addition, this session discusses possible outcomes from a TBF in relation to hearing loss and facial nerve function and potential implications for treatment, including cochlear implantation.
