Summary: In order to select the appropriate treatment techniques for oral and pharyngeal dysphagia in adults, clinicians need to understand the physiology of swallowing. This introductory course discusses the principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning as they relate to the effects of injury to the central nervous system and the potential results of swallowing intervention. The presenter discusses examples of neuromuscular treatment for pharyngeal dysphagia and gives tips on analyzing evidence and applying a theory-driven approach.

Summary: This journal self-study course explores best practices for dysphasia assessment and recent innovations in dysphagia treatment. The articles – from an American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology special issue “Select Papers From the 2018 Charleston Swallowing Conference at Northwestern University” – will help SLPs develop a deeper understanding of how to select appropriate treatment techniques, as well as why those techniques can be impactful in improving swallowing function. Summary: This is the second in a two-part course is designed to bring you comprehensive information on cleft palate assessment and treatment. With this program, you will gain a comfort level in treating cleft palate/VPI and in working collaboratively with the cleft palate/craniofacial team. You’ll hone your knowledge and clinical practice skills in treating speech disorders, from glottal stops to learned nasal emission. We’ll provide treatment rationales, procedures, and techniques that are supplemented with video clips. You’ll also learn how to distinguish “learned” from “obligatory”/physically based problems.
