Summary: This webinar will discuss all aspects of echolalia, a complex and often misunderstood language phenomenon. The speaker will discuss the origins of echolalia and review the evidence that supports it as a positive indicator of language development. The speaker will describe how to perform ongoing assessment before and during mitigation, and share intervention strategies to facilitate the transition to self-generated language.

Summary: A thorough cranial nerve examination is an essential part of the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation of every patient. When performed, it is useful in the diagnosis of speech and swallowing disorders, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for development of a targeted, individualized treatment plan. This video course provides an overview of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the cranial nerve examination. Participants will receive detailed instructions for testing and interpreting findings of the cranial nerve examination. The course also describes common abnormalities observed for patients with impairment of cranial nerve function.

Summary: This course includes five recorded sessions from the 2018 online conference “Improving Functional Outcomes in Aphasia.” These sessions discuss specific treatment approaches for particular challenges and deficits that may affect individuals with aphasia. Summary: There is not one single, authoritative construct or definition for central auditory processing disorders (CAPDs), which often results in patients receiving a general diagnosis that is not deficit-specific and management strategies that are not individualized and therefore produce less impactful outcomes. This session will describe an alternative approach to characterizing CAPDs – that is, identifying specific clinical entities within the broad construct of CAPDs that professionals can unambiguously diagnose and for which deficit-specific interventions can lead to improved outcomes in auditory processing. Summary: This course presents a practical framework for cognitive rehabilitation for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Clinicians can use the framework to identify functional treatments that are evidence-based, matched to individualized patient needs, and feasible given the time and resource constraints of the current health care environment. The course explores specific cognitive rehabilitation interventions that patients with a brain injury may find particularly valuable and motivating. The presenters use case studies to discuss how to write functional goals and identify optimum outcome measures.
