Summary: This session reviews what it means for a measure to be objective, subjective, and/or valid and applies these concepts to fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Summary: Impairments in laryngeal vestibule closure (LVC) are a major cause of aspiration during swallowing. Accurately identifying LVC impairment is a priority in dysphagia management as aspiration can occur if LVC is absent or delayed, or duration is reduced. However, this mechanism is often overlooked and underreported in the evaluation of swallowing and in swallowing research. This session discusses methods for incorporating LVC as a primary outcome measure in dysphagia diagnosis and management to increase diagnostic accuracy and optimize dysphagia management.

Summary: In this series of articles, the need for clear guidelines in graduate education on the topic of transgender voice and communication is explored through an e-survey. Considerations for culturally competent voice care is presented in the context of two case studies. Case studies are also used to highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary gender affirming approach for successful voice care with adolescence. In the final article, a voice technique is adapted for voice masculinization.

Summary: This session will discuss processes and considerations for ventilator weaning and decannulation, including secretion management techniques; impacts of cuff deflation, speaking valve use, or above the cuff phonation; and use of stoma stents. The presenter will also speak to the critical role SLPs play in educating patients and their families about the ventilator weaning and decannulation processes, reducing fear and other negative emotions and making weaning and decannulation trials more successful and comfortable.
