Course Description

This session shares findings from a tertiary care hospital at the center of the COVID-19 pandemic response in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and provides an opportunity to compare and contrast findings with global patterns and local experiences. This investigation summarizes the clinical conditions, management, and functional outcomes of adults admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 and dysphagia, and offers insights into risk factors and clinical predictions of favorable swallowing outcomes.

Presenter Information

Adamantia (Amanda) Prachali (presenting author) is the Supervisor of Speech Language Pathology at Clevelend Clinic Abu Dhabi. She is passionate about helping patients as well as team members to improve and develop themselves. Her clinical interests include voice disorders, care of the professional voice, aerodigestive tract disorders, laryngectomee rehabilitation, tracheostomy management, as well as management of swallowing disorders in head and neck and neurologic patients in the adult population.

Fatema Nasser (presenting author) is a specialist speech therapist at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Fatema worked in the UAE and London, UK, with over 10 years of experience and a special interest in assessment and treatment of dysphagia and communication disorders with adult populations within acute care hospital settings.

Aaron Thrush (nonpresenting author) is a critical care physical therapist, board-certified cardiovascular and pulmonary specialist, and research scholar at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Previous peer-reviewed publications involve describing physical therapy management and clinical outcomes in people awaiting lung transplantation, reporting psychometric properties of outcome measures in acute care, and reviewing the burden of caregiving for people with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries.
