Summary: SLPs often operate from a deficits perspective due to the practical need to focus on assessment and qualification for services. In this course – which is broken into six 5-minute blocks – the presenter will demonstrate how to focus on students’ communicative strengths in order to build rapport with students and foster positive, collaborative relationships with other stakeholders. Summary: This session addresses fully engaging the patient and decision-makers in the process of informed consent around diet consistency modification, particularly in the SNF setting. Presenters discuss relating the results of instrumental assessment of swallowing to the structure and function of the swallowing mechanism, allowing for critical thinking about risks and benefits of all the possible diet consistencies as one component of the overall plan of treatment for dysphagia.

Summary: This journal self-study course explores best practices for dysphasia assessment and recent innovations in dysphagia treatment. The articles – from an American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology special issue “Select Papers From the 2018 Charleston Swallowing Conference at Northwestern University” – will help SLPs develop a deeper understanding of how to select appropriate treatment techniques, as well as why those techniques can be impactful in improving swallowing function. The articles delve deeply into past, current, and future treatment approaches for dysphagia and will be helpful for established clinicians as well as those who are new to the field of dysphagia assessment and treatment.
