Assessment of Cognition and Communication in Older Adults With Dementia (WEB19305)
When an SLP first meets an older adult with dementia and a cognitive-communication disorder, many questions arise. What is the nature of the person’s communication problems? What are the causes and contributors to the problems? How are the problems affecting the person’s ability to participate in everyday life activities? What is the most effective, evidence-based, and person-centered approach to answering these questions? In this video course, Tammy Hopper discusses cognitive-communication disorders related to dementia and provides ideas to help SLPs select the most appropriate screening or assessment for individual clients.

- explain the demographics of dementia
- discuss the most common causes of dementia and identify their cognitive-communication profiles
- select screening and assessment methods appropriate for individuals with the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s dementia
- interpret results of screening and assessment measures, and use these results to inform intervention planning
