Summary: Dyslexia and developmental language disorders (DLD) – relatively common, language-based disorders that affect children’s reading and academic achievement as well as social and life outcomes – frequently co-occur in the same child. This session examines the differences between the two disorders, how to identify children at risk for either or both, and how to provide treatment and accommodations to promote positive outcomes. The speaker discusses evidence-based practices for assessing and treating reading difficulties.

Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: The lived experiences of neurodivergent adolescents and adults reveal that changes are needed in how SLPs approach social communication assessment and intervention. Client-centered protocols for assessing social communication must address two goals: the needs of the student, and the perspectives and behaviors of the student's peers that support or hinder social interactions. How do I assist with online learning formats? How do I make sure I'm implementing warranted, functional goals that respect students’ identities – and that take into account the social, emotional, and physical changes that occur during adolescence? Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.
