Summary: TMPRSS3 is a genetic variant associated with either progressive or congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Summary: Young musicians are exposed to traumatic sound levels that might increase their risk for tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Music and noise are known environmental risk factors for tinnitus and NIHL. This course examines a hypothesis that genetic variants might further explain clinical heterogeneity in tinnitus and NIHL.

Summary: This course features moderated discussions among a panel of clinicians who collectively provide cochlear implant auditory rehabilitation (AR) to patients of all ages. Topics and discussions demonstrate the need to expand and differentiate intervention approaches based on the unique needs of individual patients with cochlear implants. Panelists review recent studies, present translational applications, share case studies and examples, illustrate multidisciplinary professional roles, and discuss evidence-based assessment and treatment. Summary: This session describes predictors of hearing aid use time for adolescents who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) as well as activities that target self-advocacy in this population. Summary: This session describes a research investigation of speech recognition in quiet and noise in thousands of patients with varying degrees of hearing loss. Based on the data, the speaker provides clinical recommendations in which speech recognition in noise can become the default test of speech perception in routine audiologic assessment, and word recognition in quiet is only performed when it is likely to be suboptimal.

Summary: In this session, the authors briefly review the literature on the developmental risks and auditory effects of pediatric unilateral hearing loss. Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.

Summary: This session reviews information regarding the team-based assessment and management of patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and comorbid tinnitus symptoms.
